Flood Damage Prevention
The National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP) is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA),
which makes federally backed flood insurance available to property owners,
renters, and businesses. Town of North Branford participates in the NFIP and as
such, is required to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations to
help mitigate flood effects. The Engineering Department administers the Town’s
Flood Damage Prevention ordinance which can be found in Chapter 148 of the Code of the Town of
North Branford.
Permit
Application for Development in Flood Hazard Area
Any alteration or improvement of property, whether land or buildings,
within the Area of Special Flood Hazard (100-year floodplain), requires a
development permit to be submitted and approved by the Town Engineer. Please
consider contacting us early in any planning process that includes proposed
improvements to your property. We will be happy to meet with you to discuss the
impact that these regulations may have on your project. Please call or email
the Engineering Department if you have any questions or to setup an appointment
to meet with the Town Engineer.
Flood
Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM’s)
The Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) has created Flood Insurance Rate Maps, also known as FIRMs, which
indicate whether properties are in areas of high, moderate or low flood risk.
In reviewing the New Haven County maps for the Town of North Branford, many
property owners may find that their risk is higher or lower than they thought.
If the risk level for a property changes, so may the requirement to carry flood
insurance. Those who have a federally backed mortgage, or plan to refinance
with a federally backed lender, will be required to purchase flood insurance if
they find that their home is shown in a high-risk flood area known as a Special
Flood Hazard Area on the most up to date FIRMs. Residents are encouraged to
contact their insurance agent or visit www.floodsmart.govto learn more about how and where to get a policy.
FEMA has created a Flood Map Service Center where all flood
hazard mapping products created under the National Flood Insurance Program can
be viewed, printed, or purchased. The FIRMs can be viewed at the North Branford
Town Hall and at the FEMA
Flood Map Service Center website. The Town of North Branford is not
affiliated with or responsible for the contents of the FEMA Map Service Center,
it is offered here as a convenience for the residents or prospective residents.
North Branford residents are also encouraged to contact
their insurance agent, FEMA, or the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental
Protection (CT DEEP) for more information relevant to the NFIP and with
questions relevant to FIRMs or Flood Insurance. For additional information, you
